Purcell exquisitely expresses the anguish of the text Hear my Prayer, O Lord and Lauridsen’s eerily beautiful setting of O Nata Lux has been described as 'a classic of new American choral writing'. Bach’s unerring grasp of the dramatic possibilities of the Christmas story in his Christmas Oratorio is portrayed in richly harmonised chorales and meditative arias, while Duruflé's setting of the Requiem Mass focuses on images of rest and peace, and  his sensuous harmonies suffuse every note with feeling.
